Practice on Staten Island, Road Test – Rahway, New Jersey

Upon enrolling with our school an individual training program will be created for you. For your convenience we provide training 7 days a week. You will be given study material. Range instruction will be given in our new large training yard. You will also be receiving road instructions as well

Steps Of the Road Test:

1. Pre Trip Inspection

This is the first part, during this part you are required to do the air brake testing, the in cab inspection. As well as listing all the engine compartments, steering components and all lights/ reflectors.

2. Maneuvers

The second part of the road test consist of:
  • Forward Stop
  • Straight Line Backing
  • Forward Offset Tracking
  • Reverse Offset Backing
These exercises help you to learn how to control the vehicle while you are backing up.
  • Pull-Ups
  • Back Ups
  • Encroachments
  • Outside Vehicle Observations
  • Final Position

Forward Stop: Drive forward through the alley and stop with the front most part of the vehicle within the box at the end of the alley without going past it. You may stop only once.

Straight Line Backing: Back up straight through the alley until the front of your vehicle has cleared the last set of cones at the far end of the alley.

Forward Offset Tracking: You will drive forward and steer to the left through the opening into the opposite lane, keeping the right most rear tire between the cone and the line.

Reverse Offset Backing: Starting parallel with the outer boundary, offset back into the alley, bringing the rear most part of your vehicle within three (3) feet of the rear of the alley.

3. Drive

This will be the last part of the test. At this part of the test you will drive. During the drive you will be stating out loud your actions. Example: Shouting out street signs, railroad crossing, approaching overpass/ underpass, etc.

How to Obtain Class A Permit:

  1. Pass A Department Of Transportation Physical
  2. Study For Permit- You can go down to the DMV to get the handbook to study from
  3. Take the permit test
    • General Knowledge
    • Air Brakes
    • Combination Vehicle
  4. You will also need to take an Entry Level Driving Training Course.
